DIRECTOR OF SALES, MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

The nationally acclaimed Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum seeks an individual to aggressively lead the Museum’s marketing, sales and public relations activities. As a member of the senior leadership team, the employee will be responsible for designing, implementing and measuring all aspects of sales, marketing and public relations for Museum programs, exhibits and related activities throughout southeastern Michigan, Washtenaw County and beyond.

We seek an energetic and highly motivated individual desiring to work in a fast-paced and creative environment. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience utilizing print, broadcast and web media in a high profile public organization. Knowledge of advanced sales, marketing and sponsorship techniques is essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Researches, develops and implements aggressive strategies for selling Museum services and products, including memberships and admissions, education programs, exhibits, after-hour rentals, special events, etc.
  • Promotes Museum and its exhibitions, programs and special events through all appropriate media, including advertising, social networking, general and special publications, public relations, ongoing media relations, community events and professional conferences.
  • In collaboration with the Museum’s Director of Development, identifies sponsorship opportunities for programs, exhibits and related activities.
  • Establishes an annual communications, sales and marketing plan and budget keyed directly to organizational objectives for review by the Executive Director. Analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of sales and marketing methods, costs and results.
  • Manages the Museum’s media relations activities; maintains effective relations with print, broadcast and web-based media throughout the Museum’s service area; writes and disseminates press releases and editorial advisories.
  • Conducts research regarding the Museum’s current markets, analyzes market trends and opportunities aimed at expansion of the Museum’s sales and services.
  • Serves as the Museum spokesperson and collaborates staff contact with representatives of the media.
  • Develops partnerships and collaborations within community and southeastern Michigan service area to benefit Museum.
  • Prepares, edits and supervises production of email newsletter, website and print publications.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises the activities of the Museum’s graphics and membership staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Related Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in relevant trustee task forces, committees and those assigned by the Executive Director
  • Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Facilitates staff and internal communications, in collaboration with the Executive Director and Director of Operations.
  • Actively participates in the “on-duty” staff rotation.
  • Develops and implements employee recognition and team building activities.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work collegially within a small or large group setting.
  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of southeastern Michigan and Washtenaw County broadcast, media, web and radio communities.
  • Ability to manage several tasks simultaneously.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in marketing, public relations or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Three-five years marketing and public relations experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in social networking and viral marketing techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong organization and project management abilities.

FRONT DESK STAFF

Must be a computer literate “people person” who is able to pay attention to details and accurately handle money. The ability to multi-task in a prompt, polite and helpful manner is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all phases of customer service in the Museum store, including greeting customers, selection and facilitating sales
  • Duties include cash register operation, balancing the cash drawer
  • Pricing new stock, restocking items, keeping store clean and neat and helping with displays and merchandising

Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively with general public
  • Positive attitude
  • Ability to handle high volume sales
  • Punctuality and reliability
  • Basic math skills and ability to make change

Hours

Hours are flexible depending on other Front Desk staff schedules. Available hours include: Monday – Saturday 9:30am – 5:30pm, Sunday 11:30am – 5:30pm. Some occasional hours are scheduled based on Museum Rentals events.

Pay

$7.40 per hour

CAMP-IN ASSISTANT (overnight program)

Camp-In Assistants deliver science workshops, assist with check-in, serve food, set-up and clean-up.

Responsibilities

  • Teach informal science content from established Museum scripts to elementary through middle school aged groups
  • Create a dynamic atmosphere that engages campers
  • Provide superior customer service to leaders, teachers, chaperones, scouts, students and families
  • Set-up and clean-up of Camp-In and workshops completed in an organized and timely manner
  • Attend the meeting before each Camp-In
  • Assist with camper check-in
  • Serve snack and breakfast to campers
  • Facilitate lights-out procedure
  • Attend all training sessions
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Formal or informal teaching experience is required (coursework in education and science a plus)
  • Demonstrated punctuality and reliability
  • Ability to teach from a script with little or no supervision
  • Ability to adopt lesson plans to various age groups with little or no planning
  • Must be self motivated and comfortable teaching independently and with a team
  • Comfortable leading workshops for 30+ people of diverse background and ages
  • Dynamic presentation skills
  • Demonstrate excitement, energy and enthusiasm

Seasonal part-time, Friday night through Saturday morning January through May 2 shifts: 6pm Friday – 12:30am Saturday or 6pm Friday – 10am Saturday

SCOUT WORKSHOP FACILITATOR

Scout Workshop Facilitators deliver science badge workshops to scout groups.

Responsibilities

GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN

This position will be ideal for Graphic Design students who would like to acquire real world production experience at an in-house agency.

Responsibilities

Students will be responsible for design/production of various marketing materials (brochures, newsletters, postcards, posters, etc.), exhibit signs and other design projects for the Museum under the direction of the senior designer.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be in Junior standing or higher in the School of Art and have a developed sense of design principles. Knowledge of Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop on an intermediate level is required. Experience using Acrobat, Flash and Dreamweaver is a plus. A portfolio is required!

Hours

10 – 12 hours a week.
