VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES


The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum welcomes individual and group volunteers over the age of 14 from all backgrounds. If you are interested in volunteering for an event at the Museum, you must schedule your time a minimum of 2 weeks in advance of the event. To schedule volunteering time please contact the Volunteer Coordinator via email at volunteer@aahom.org.

The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is currently accepting volunteers for the following events:

Members Nights

These 2 hour events are for the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum Members and take place at the Museum. Volunteers need to arrive at 5pm and can expect to finish between 8:30pm and 8:45pm. Volunteers fill a variety of roles including: facilitating hands-on science activities for all ages, greeters and assisting with refreshments.

  • February 4, 2009 — Solar System Science
  • May 6, 2009 — Awesome Animal Adventure

Sciencepalooza

Sciencepalooza Science Street Fairs take place the first weekend of every month. These science festivals provide a plethora of hands-on activities to our general visitors during regular Museum hours (Saturdays 10am – 4pm & Sunday Noon – 4pm). Volunteers can give time for one weekend day or both and for the entire day or part of the day. During Sciencepalooza Science Street Fairs volunteers facilitate hands-on activity tables with our general visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Expect to get messy!

  • February 7 – 8, 2008 — Coffee, Tea & Chocolate
  • March 7 – 8, 2008 — Car Carnival
  • April 4 – 5, 2008 — Physicspalooza
  • May 2 – 3, 2008 — Solar System Science

Special Events

These Museum events range in length from 1 day of activities to 7 days of activities. Special Events provide a plethora of hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations and special guests to our general visitors during regular Museum hours (Monday – Saturday 10am – 4pm & Sunday Noon – 4pm). Volunteers can give time for one day or several and for the entire day or part of the day. During Special Events volunteers facilitate hands-on activities with our general visitors of all ages and backgrounds and assist with interactive demonstrations. There is a good chance that you will get messy!

Dates

  • December 26 – 31, 2008 — The Big Freeze
    Volunteers are needed to assist with ice cream making workshops, liquid nitrogen demonstrations and hands-on activity tables Monday – Saturday 9:30am – 5:30pm and on Sunday 11:30am – 5:30pm.
  • January 19, 2009 — Science Is for Everyone! Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
    Volunteers are needed to facilitate hands-on activity tables 9:30am – 5:30pm.

According to the Youth Employment Standards Act of 1978 (P.A. 90 of 1978) any minor who is 11 up to 18 years of age and not specifically exempted from the Youth Employment Standards Act of 1978 (P.A. 90 of 1978) and who works in a paid or unpaid position, must have a work permit. Work permits may be obtained from the Issuing Officer of the school district, intermediate school district, public school academy or non-public school in which the minor resides or in which the minor’s place of employment is located.
