Good Vibrations: Art, Science and a Music Video!

Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra

We will explore how sound is generated, how humans hear, and how instruments and the human voice can make beautiful music. During the first half of the day, campers will have a chance to make musical instruments, play musical instruments, learn simple conducting patterns, explore symphonic music, move to the music, learn about sound waves and how the human ear hears and so much more! Then, after lunch, the class will work together to create a MUSIC VIDEO, premiering it for parents on the last day of class! This camp will be collaboratively (and harmoniously) taught by Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum staff and Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra staff.

Campers should bring their own snack, lunch and drink each day.

June 23 – 27 (mornings)    Trees and Bugs
Grades K – 2; Grades 3 – 5

What a great week of fun creating a forest mural, actively discovering about trees and the bugs that live within them, extracting chlorophyll from leaves (just like chemists!) and playing games that help kids learn about the food chain.

July 7 – 11 (mornings)    Astronauts and our Solar System
Grades K – 2; Grades 3 – 5

Campers will become astronauts who explore the moon, learn about the sun, create a moonscape and have a blast traveling through our solar system.

July 7 – 11 (mornings)    Wild n’ Crazy Weather
Grades K – 2; Grades 3 – 5

Michigan has crazy weather…and we’ll learn all about the crazy weather we have! Rain, wind, tornadoes—even sunshine—will be explored with hands-on activities.

July 14 – 18 (mornings)    Stretch, Kick and Flip
Grades K – 2; Grades 3 – 5

Sports heroes depend on their bones, muscles, hearts, and eat good food to keep their bodies in tip-top shape. We’ll conduct experiments exploring the calcium content in bones, look inside a real animal heart, discover how nutrition keeps our bodies fueled… and play some cool games, too.

July 21 – 25 (mornings)    Water Wonders
Grades K – 2 only

We’ll have a great time learning all about water, conducting experiments in which we learn about the properties of water, have fun with water pressure and will build boats to see them float and sink! Be prepared to get WET.

July 28 – August 1 (mornings)    Bugs for Beginners
Grades K – 2 only

Campers will have great fun crawling like bugs, making bugs, drawing them…even dissecting a few.

August 11 – 15 (mornings)    Michigan Plant Fun
Grades K – 2;  Grades 3 – 5

The woods and pathways will be our inspiration for this camp as we learn about the plants near our camp.  We’ll draw plants we see, make paper and dyes from plants around us.
